Tillandsia streptophylla is native from Southern Mexico to Honduras, it is another species that has (in the wild) ant associations (a myrmecophyte).

It has a lovely shape with long soft silvery green leaves like tagliatelle pasta that fold back over its bulbous base, the flower spike is elaborate with pink primary bracts and bright green flower bracts with contrasting purple flowers.

This species likes high light levels with regular misting and good air-movement.

Tillandsia streptophylla is not often available here in the UK.

Streptophylla crowned King

This was the fourth Streptophylla for my collection, the third from Andy; but why so many of the same you might ask? I love the variablity of Streptophylla as a species, which apart from different leaf widths and overall body colours, it can also range from being a tight ball to one with out-stretched limbs looking like an green unruly octopus.
This time I went the whole way for an XL size, which despite the higher price was well worth it. This specimen was more of the flamboyant kind with wavy arms all over the place. But what made this one so appealing was the way that the newer fresher growth made the plant look as if it was wearing a fantastic lime-green crown. As this range was fairly limited, Andy was very helpful as he sent me photos so that I could select the one I wanted.
As always, Andy packed this very well and there was no damage at all to any of the fragile limbs. I would definitely save to buy this splendid species. To those who don't know streptophylla, it can tolerate drought very well which in turn will affect its look: well watered will make its leaves straighter and underwatering will make the leaves curl and twist. So you can actually control its overall look without damaging the plant.
