Vriesea scalaris var. rubra is the name i have been given with this plant although on further research it may be V. simplex.
This plant was gifted to me by a well known local Doctor and plant collector Rob Senior, I was his gardener for a few years before he passed away. Ive had this plant in my collection for about 10 years before finally having it bulked up enough to sell a few plants. It is very attractive with its glossy green leaves, prominent red underside of the leaves and an incredible hanging inflorescence reminiscent of the hanging flowers of some tropical Heliconia in the Ginger family.
This plant is perfect for a hanging basket or could work really well mounted so the under side of the leaves and the hanging inflorescence can be enjoyed.
