Neoregelia cruenta var. rubra is a large growing stiff leaved Bromeliad from the coastal plains Brazil's Maca region where it is most often found growing in sand in full sun.
The plant is generally green with nice silver banding on the outside of the leaves. It colours up red at anthesis (flowering stage) and if pot bound/low nutrient, in full sun. It is stoloniferous, producing a pup or two on 6 to 10 inch stolons. This is an adaptation no doubt for growing in sandy situations where the ground level can shift, shifting sands. It can also produce pups from around the base.
